The Great Lakes are known for their ore boats, a fleet of bulk carriers which transport iron ore, coal, grain, gravel, and other bulk goods throughout the Great Lakes region.

The Hon. James L. Oberstar, formerly Charles M. Beeghly, entered service on May 16, 1958. She is 806 feet long with a beam of 75 feet. Today she is owned by Interlake Steamship Company.
