Description
Kings Canyon National Park is located at the Southern end of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, adjacent to Sequoia National Park. The 722 square mile park was established in 1940, and features some of the most rugged terrain in the continental United States. The park forms the headwaters of the South and Middle Fork of the Kings River, and the South Fork of the San Joaquin River. Kings Canyon National Park is especially popular with backpackers due to its extensive wilderness, which features popular hiking trails such as the John Muir Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Rae Lakes Loop Trail. The park is home to General Grant Tree, the second largest tree in the world.
The John Muir Trail runs South from Yosemite National Park all the way to the summit of Mount Whitney in Sequoia National Park. The trail also passes through Kings Canyon National Park, and is recognized as one of the most scenic through hikes in the world.
